Industrial Cattle Herd in Ukraine Grows by Nearly 10,000 Heads in 2025

As of December 1, 2025, Ukraine maintains 1.943 million heads of cattle, including 1.076 million cows, reports ProAgro Group.

Compared to November 1, 2025, the total cattle herd decreased by 77.8 thousand heads (-4%), while the number of cows fell by 29.3 thousand heads (-3%). Compared to December 1, 2024, the total herd decreased by 236 thousand heads (-11%), including cows – by 141 thousand heads (-12%).

Approximately 49% of the animals are kept on industrial farms, while 51% are in household farms.

In the industrial sector, there are 948 thousand heads of cattle, which is 1 thousand more (+0.1%) compared to November 1, 2025. The number of cows amounts to 385.2 thousand heads, up by 1.1 thousand (+0.3%). Over the past year, the cattle herd in industrial farms increased by 30.7 thousand heads (+3%), while the number of cows grew by 9.9 thousand (+3%).

In the household sector, there are 995 thousand heads of cattle, which is 79 thousand less (-7%) compared to November 2025. The number of cows in household farms is 690.8 thousand, down by 30 thousand (-4%) from the previous month. Over the past year, the number of cattle in households decreased by 266 thousand (-21%), and the number of cows fell by 151 thousand (-18%).

According to preliminary data from the State Statistics Service, the growth in cow numbers on agricultural enterprises was recorded in Kharkiv (+16%), Volyn (+15%), Rivne (+13%), Ivano-Frankivsk (+10%), Lviv (+10%), Ternopil (+10%), Khmelnytskyi (+8%), Chernihiv (+6%), Vinnytsia (+3%), Mykolaiv (+3%), Cherkasy (+2%), Zhytomyr (+1%), Kyiv (+1%), and Poltava (+0.2%) regions compared to last year.

As previously reported, beef prices are rising, which may lead to a decrease in cattle numbers.
