More than 12,000 hectares of agricultural land were returned to use in Ukraine in 2025 through humanitarian demining efforts under the state compensation program, according to ProAgro Group.
The Ministry of Economy of Ukraine reported that 61 contracts were executed during the year by the Humanitarian Demining Center with auction winners. The total value of completed works amounted to nearly UAH 713 million.
“A full year of the state compensation program for demining agricultural land is my key achievement in humanitarian demining,” said Ihor Bezkaravainyi. “To date, we have already returned more than 12,000 hectares. This year alone, the Demining Center signed contracts to clear over 17,000 hectares worth UAH 1.17 billion. The launch of the program has stimulated demand for demining machinery, advanced technologies, and state-provided services.”
An important step in 2025 was the extension of the compensation program to households. Owners and tenants of agricultural plots affected by the war can now apply for demining. Preliminary estimates suggest that nearly 1 million hectares of farmland may qualify. By year-end, dozens of applications had already been submitted by individual farmers.
Overall, the number of certified demining operators in Ukraine almost doubled in 2025, increasing from 73 to 134.
Ukraine continues to receive strong international support, with partners’ contributions to humanitarian demining reaching approximately $1.5 billion. Additional commitments of $80 million were announced during the Ukraine Mine Action Conference 2025, hosted by Japan. With partner support, work is underway to develop the GRIT digital platform for planning, prioritization, and monitoring of humanitarian demining.
As previously reported, Ukraine’s 2026 state budget allocates UAH 14.1 billion to support the agricultural sector, including UAH 2 billion specifically earmarked for humanitarian demining of agricultural land.
