Farmers in Poltava region to sow 1.4 million hectares of spring crops

Farmers in Ukraine’s Poltava region plan to sow 1.4 million hectares of spring crops this season across all categories of farms. The largest areas will traditionally be allocated to grain and oilseed crops, ProAgro Group reports.

According to Serhii Frolov, Director of the Department of Agro-Industrial Development of the Poltava Regional Military Administration, the crop structure will include:

  • corn for grain — 502.5 thousand ha;
  • sunflower — 433 thousand ha;
  • soybeans — 174.8 thousand ha;
  • potatoes, vegetables and melons — 84.5 thousand ha;
  • forage crops — 50.9 thousand ha;
  • sugar beets — 25 thousand ha.

To carry out the sowing campaign, farms in the region require 32.4 thousand tonnes of spring grain seeds. The seed supply has already been fully formed, and currently the material is being brought to sowing standards. As of now, 28.3 thousand tonnes, or 87% of the required amount, have already been prepared.

Demand for mineral fertilizers for spring fieldwork is estimated at 35 thousand tonnes of active ingredient, while farms currently have about 22 thousand tonnes, covering 63% of the need. The market for crop protection products remains stable, and no supply disruptions are reported.

Farmers will also need 21.7 thousand tonnes of diesel fuel for spring field operations. As of February 2026, farms had accumulated around 50% of the required volume, with plans to increase stocks to 70% by the end of March. Smaller farms often receive fuel via delivery because they lack licensed storage facilities. No fuel shortages are reported, although prices have increased.

The region’s machinery fleet is ready for fieldwork, while farms continue upgrading agricultural equipment.

Regarding winter crops, Frolov noted that 292.2 thousand hectares of winter grains were sown in autumn for the 2026 harvest, while the area under winter rapeseed increased to 56.4 thousand hectares. Before winter, 80% of crops were in good condition, while 20% were rated satisfactory.

However, the winter proved difficult for crops in some parts of the region. Ice crust formation created unfavorable overwintering conditions, and warming temperatures led to the formation of waterlogged areas in fields. As a result, part of the crop area may need to be reseeded.

Earlier it was reported that farmers in Poltava region harvested over 4 million tonnes of grain last year. By early December, they had already harvested 2.4 million tonnes of corn from nearly 90% of the planned area.
