New EU-Integrated Animal Welfare Requirements Take Effect in Ukraine

As of January 1, 2026, new regulations aimed at improving the welfare of farm animals have officially entered into force in Ukraine, according to ProAgro Group.

The State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection reported that the new requirements are part of Ukraine’s EU integration commitments and are designed to harmonize national legislation with European Union standards.

The rules apply to all categories of farm animals used for the production of food, wool, leather, fur, or other agricultural purposes. In addition, the legislation introduces specific (additional) requirements for pigs, calves, broilers, and laying hens.

The changes предусматривают stricter control over animal housing conditions, including access to quality feed, water, sufficient space for movement, and measures to prevent cruel treatment. From now on, farming enterprises must comply with clearly defined standards aligned with European animal welfare practices.

The State Service emphasized that implementing the new requirements will not only improve animal welfare but also enhance the competitiveness of Ukrainian agricultural products on the European market.

Earlier, Poland adopted legislation that fully bans the breeding and farming of fur animals in the country.
