Winter peas for the 2026 harvest have been sown in Odesa Oblast on farms belonging to the Tekom Agro Group. The total planted area amounts to around 330 hectares, ProAgro Group reports.
According to Serhii Shtyrbulov, Deputy Head of Production, with the right agronomic approach and good yields, peas can successfully compete with other crops in the crop rotation. Under the climatic conditions of Odesa region, winter peas perform significantly better than spring peas. By using winter moisture, the crop manages to develop before the onset of summer drought.
After overwintering, at the beginning of spring, winter peas already have a well-developed root system, which in some cases reaches depths of up to 10 cm, Shtyrbulov noted.
He added that in terms of development, peas are similar to winter barley and have flexible sowing windows. This allowed farms within Tekom Agro Group to carry out sowing from mid-October and even as late as the end of December.
“This is the period when precipitation usually occurs, making it possible to achieve good emergence and uniform crop development. In addition, including peas in the crop rotation helps reduce the area under spring crops, particularly sunflower,” the expert said.
The crop rotation at Agrofirma Pivdenna, another enterprise within the group, also includes lentils, with plans to significantly expand their planted area this year.
Earlier, it was reported that the 2025/26 season turned out to be paradoxical for Ukraine’s pea market: a record harvest resulted in record marketing difficulties.
