The Ukrainian vegetable market is preparing to import early potatoes and onions due to seasonal demand for fresh produce, according to ProAgro Group.

Imports are considered a temporary tool to stabilize supplies in retail chains and wholesale markets. The main drivers include seasonal fluctuations in the supply from Ukrainian greenhouse producers and growing demand for fresh vegetables. An additional factor is the logistical advantage of neighboring suppliers, who can offer products earlier than the start of mass harvesting in Ukraine.

Retail chains and wholesale suppliers use prompt imports to maintain stable supply, but are forced to adjust pricing policies to account for transportation costs and customs duties.

Farmers view imports as a signal to invest in early varieties, improve storage technologies, and develop more active marketing initiatives to protect domestic production. Overall, imports of early potatoes and onions are seen as a market adaptation tool that should be combined with quality control, efficient logistics, and support for Ukrainian producers.

Earlier, it was reported that an increase in tomato imports from Turkey is expected at the end of March, which will help balance the market and stabilize prices.
