The actual condition of winter crops in Ukraine and the impact of winter weather can be assessed only after temperatures rise and vegetation resumes, said Taras Vysotskyi, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture, reports ProAgro Group.
According to him, the current situation in the fields is typical for the winter period: no active fieldwork is underway, and crops remain in dormancy. Some farms may apply mineral fertilizers, but this is not critical at this stage and can be done later.
“Crops are in a dormant state and are waiting for vegetation to resume,” Vysotskyi noted.
He also said that corn harvesting has not yet been completed in some regions, but this does not pose a serious problem, as the work can be resumed once weather conditions improve.
Commenting on the potential impact of frost and snow cover on winter crops, the deputy minister emphasized that the situation varies significantly by region, temperature regime, and snow depth, making nationwide conclusions premature at this point.
“An objective assessment of weather impacts will be possible in spring, and in some regions as early as late February, after warming and the resumption of vegetation,” he stressed.
The ministry added that the situation is under constant monitoring, and final conclusions regarding the overwintering of winter crops will be made once plants emerge from dormancy.
Earlier, it was reported that a combination of a new wave of extreme frost at the beginning of this month and insufficient snow cover could pose serious risks to winter crops across much of Ukraine.
