Freight rates for grain stabilized after a short increase

By the end of October, shipping rates for grain transportation from Ukraine remain stable.

As reported by Pavlo Lysenko, analyst at ASAP Agri and freight broker at Atria Brokers, despite the recent growth, the market has returned to equilibrium — the increase in tonnage supply halted further rate hikes.

In the coaster fleet segment, it became more difficult for shipowners to maintain elevated tariffs, as the number of available vessels in the region increased. A similar situation is observed in the Handysizes — limited tonnage supply is compensated by a moderate cargo flow from the Black Sea ports. The Panamax segment also demonstrates stability.

According to Atria Brokers, the current rates are:

  • Panamax — $46–47/t for transporting corn from Ukraine’s deep-water ports to South China.
  • Handysize — $24–25/t for shipping 30 thousand tons of corn to the eastern coast of Italy.
  • Coaster — $36–38/t (+$1/t week-on-week) for transporting 6 thousand tons of corn from Ukraine’s Danube ports to the Eastern Mediterranean.

The grain freight market demonstrates signs of stabilization, allowing traders and logistics companies to plan transportation costs more accurately.
