Hals Agro has become the first company in Ukraine to use biomethane for sugar production, resulting in a certified “green” product, ProAgro Group reports.
According to CEO Serhii Kravchuk, biomethane was supplied directly to the company’s sugar plant, and the produced sugar received official certification confirming its renewable origin.
“We are the first this year to use biomethane for sugar production. We supplied it to our sugar plant, and today we officially have certified ‘green’ sugar – something that probably does not yet exist in Europe,” he said.
Kravchuk noted that sugar production using biomethane aligns with the EU’s climate policy aimed at reducing fossil fuel consumption. He added that many EU sugar plants still rely heavily on natural gas instead of switching to biomethane.
He also pointed out that the European Union is not yet fully prepared for large-scale biomethane implementation. Not all member states have introduced a unified biomethane registry, which creates technical and regulatory challenges. Despite this, Ukraine is moving faster in terms of digitalization and implementing the necessary mechanisms.
Earlier it was reported that in 2025 Hals Agro exported 75 thousand cubic meters of biomethane produced at its own facilities.
