In Ukraine, interest in niche vegetable crops is growing noticeably, particularly sweet potatoes and asparagus.
This was reported in the market review of the magazine «Horticulture in Ukrainian» by expert Ksenia Huseva.
«While sweet potatoes were previously sold only in premium supermarkets – such as Le Silpo or Delmar – now they can be found even in regular retail chains, particularly Varus. The price has also become quite affordable», she noted.
According to the expert, the production of salads and greens is also growing: countless fresh mixes, ready-made packaged salads, green onions, parsley, and dill are appearing on the shelves.
«I wouldn’t say prices are high,» Huseva added, «but the selection is much wider now than a few years ago. Conditions for growing greens are currently favorable, so production is gradually increasing».
At the same time, greens and sweet potatoes remain niche crops, primarily grown under specific contracts – for supermarkets or restaurants.
«This is not a mass product: you need to know exactly who you will be selling to before planting. If ten farms nearby grow onions, and only one grows potatoes, then it is the potatoes that will be in demand», the expert explained.
