Ukraine has launched its largest forest seedling center in the Chernihiv region, ProAgro Group[a1] reports.
According to the Ministry of Economy, the facility will grow tree seedlings with a closed root system (CRS), supplying high-quality planting material to both northern and southern regions of the country. The center’s projected capacity reaches up to 10 million seedlings annually.
The project was implemented by the state enterprise “Forests of Ukraine” as part of the sector’s transition to modern forest restoration practices.
The center is equipped with advanced technologies, including automated production lines, greenhouses, growing fields, and cold storage facilities. Currently, Ukraine operates nine such centers, forming a nationwide network aimed at strengthening reforestation efforts, particularly in de-occupied and war-affected areas.
The use of closed root system technology allows for a longer planting period, improves seedling survival rates to over 90%, and accelerates forest growth. It also reduces the number of seedlings required per hectare.
In addition, the center will establish a seed bank with reserves sufficient to grow more than 100 million seedlings, ensuring independence from annual seed yields.
The government emphasizes that forests are a strategic renewable resource and continues to promote modern, efficient, and transparent approaches to forest restoration.
