All-Ukrainian Farmers Congress: Sunflower is the Most Profitable Crop to Grow

Sunflower confidently remains the leader among crops for profitability for farmers in 2025.

Yes, according to research conducted by the All-Ukrainian Congress of Farmers, the EBITDA indicator clearly shows that sunflower is the most profitable. Under favorable weather conditions and proper technological support, particularly through the effective use of mineral fertilizers, quality seeds, and modern plant protection products, profitability can reach 985 $/ha, especially in the western regions.

In second place after sunflower is wheat, followed by corn, soybeans, and rapeseed.

“For 10 years I have been farming, and all this time sunflower has been the most profitable crop for my farm. That’s why we sow it, but once every 4-5 years – no more often,” said Hryhoriy SHAMRYTSKYI, Deputy Head of the All-Ukrainian Congress of Farmers, Head of the Poltava Region Farmers Congress, Head of FH “Moya Zemlya 2015” (My Land 2015), Poltava region.

Profitability indicators may differ slightly across various regions, but overall, sunflower still confidently holds the first place.

However, regarding yield and cost indicators, sunflower somewhat  lags behind corn. Thus, corn yield can range from 40 to 97 cwt/ha in different regions, while sunflower yield ranges from 22 to 32 cwt/ha. Costs for sunflower can range from 763 to 942 $/ha, whereas for corn they range from 847 to 1408 $/ha.

According to the Deputy Head of the All-Ukrainian Congress of Farmers, corn in the Poltava region yields quite good harvests, but “it definitely requires anhydrous ammonia and definitely a soil herbicide.”

“Wheat must also be included in the crop rotation; it yields good harvests in our region if worked properly, 6-7 tons, and this year it was sold at a good price,” he noted.

In addition, rapeseed should also be included in the crop rotation, although it requires a lot of work, the farmer noted.
