Greenhouse Growers Start Selling Fresh Cucumber Crop

Several greenhouse producers in Ukraine have started selling cucumbers from the new production cycle. The produce has already begun to enter the market in large volumes; however, supply is still insufficient to fully meet current buyer demand, ProAgro Group reports.

Limited availability allows sellers to keep prices at relatively high levels. At present, producers are offering cucumbers at UAH 140–180 per kg, depending on variety, quality, and batch size. For comparison, imported cucumbers from Turkey are currently sold at UAH 130–160 per kg. Market participants explain the price difference by higher quality of local produce, limited supply, and higher production costs.

Despite the cold winter, the sales season for cucumbers from the new crop in Ukraine started approximately at the same time as last year. However, prices during the same period last year were on average 14% higher than current levels.

According to market experts, more significant price declines in this segment should not be expected earlier than in 1.5–2 months, when supply from both stationary greenhouse complexes and plastic-covered greenhouses increases substantially.

A month earlier, it was reported that prices for greenhouse vegetables in Ukraine were rising due to limited supply.
