Oil contamination has been detected in the Dniester River following a russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine, ProAgro Group reports.
According to the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine, oily spots were discovered on March 10, 2026, near the village of Liadova in Vinnytsia region. Preliminary data suggest the pollution may be linked to a rocket fuel leak near the Dniester Hydropower Plant in Chernivtsi region, which occurred after a Russian strike on March 7.
The contamination has spread downstream along the river and was also recorded near Naslavcea in Moldova, raising concerns about a transboundary environmental threat.
“We consider this incident another manifestation of russia’s environmental aggression, which threatens cross-border water security and requires proper international legal assessment,” said Deputy Minister Iryna Ovcharenko.
Ukrainian authorities are coordinating response measures, including deploying containment booms and absorbent materials to localize and collect the oil pollution.
Laboratory tests have already confirmed oil product concentrations exceeding the permissible limit by 2.5 times near the village of Nahoriany. Ukraine has officially informed Moldova about the pollution and is coordinating actions through the Dniester Commission to minimize environmental damage.
