Unlike the general trend in the European Union, the pig herd in Denmark continues to increase, ProAgro Group reports.
As of January 1, 2026, Denmark had a total pig population of 12.3 million head, which is 690,000 pigs, or 6%, more than a year earlier. This is the highest pig herd level recorded in Denmark over the past four years following a sharp decline in 2022–2023. However, the figure still remains below the 2022 level, when the country’s pig population reached 13.2 million head.
Year-on-year, the number of sows increased by 1.4% to 956,000 head. The number of piglets and fattening pigs also rose: the population of pigs weighing under 50 kg grew by 5.8% to 5.77 million head, while the number of pigs weighing 50 kg and above increased by 10.9% to 2.78 million head.
As previously reported, the European pig sector is currently facing additional pressure due to outbreaks of African swine fever in Spain and China’s anti-dumping duties.
