Poland records its largest avian influenza outbreak: 1.5 million chickens culled

Poland has recorded one of its largest avian influenza outbreaks in the past two years, ProAgro Group reports.

According to Poultry World, nearly 1.5 million laying hens were culled due to the disease in the Greater Poland Voivodeship, the country’s Chief Veterinary Inspectorate said.

This marks the 19th avian influenza outbreak in Poland since the beginning of the year and the ninth case in the Greater Poland region. At the same time, the virus is also actively spreading in the Lublin Voivodeship.

Veterinary authorities report that as of January 13, 2026, around 1.3 million birds were kept at infected farms. Most of them have been culled, resulting in significant losses for farmers.

Given the seriousness of the situation, a special investigative team has been dispatched to the Greater Poland Voivodeship to analyze possible links between affected farms and to assist local veterinary services in containing the disease.

In total, 127 avian influenza outbreaks were recorded in Poland in 2025, leading to the loss of more than 10 million birds.

As previously reported, Poland nearly doubled its imports of table eggs in the first nine months of 2025 to 25.4 thousand tonnes, up from 13.7 thousand tonnes a year earlier, in order to maintain export volumes and curb domestic prices.
