Romania Acquires Moldova’s Giurgiulesti Port and Plans to Expand Regional Trade

Romania has completed the acquisition of the Giurgiulesti port complex from neighboring Moldova, marking an important strategic step in the development of trade in the Black Sea–Danube region. The deal was officially announced in Bucharest and Chișinău, highlighting the deepening economic cooperation between the two countries, ProAgro Group reports.

Under the agreement, Romania gained ownership of a key multimodal logistics hub located at the confluence of the Danube River and the Danube–Black Sea canal. The port’s assets include deep-water berths capable of handling seagoing vessels, grain terminals, as well as infrastructure for bulk cargo, containerized freight, and dry goods.

The Romanian government noted that the acquisition aligns with the country’s long-term strategy to expand access to maritime trade routes and strengthen exports of agricultural and industrial products. Planned developments include modernization of port facilities, increased throughput capacity, and integration of the port with Romania’s rail and road infrastructure. Investments are also expected in grain transshipment, construction of storage facilities, and the development of value-added logistics services.

The history of the project spans several years. Romania publicly expressed its intention to take control of the port back in 2023, while negotiations intensified last year amid deeper economic integration between the two countries.

For Moldova, the sale of the port became part of a broader policy aimed at optimizing state assets and attracting investment. At the same time, Romania is obtaining direct control over a strategic maritime outlet for the first time. According to experts, this will allow the country to boost exports – primarily agricultural products – and strengthen its position in the logistics system of the Black Sea–Danube region.

Earlier, it was reported that Moldova canceled licensing requirements for imports of Ukrainian grain and oilseeds in 2026.
