The current state of potato farming in Ukraine still limits access to export markets. This opinion was expressed by Kostiantyn Shytiuk, Operations Director at Continental Farmers Group, in an interview with Plantator magazine, ProAgro Group reports.
“Work on opening the EU market is underway, but there will be no quick decisions,” Shytiuk said.
He уточнив, що discussions are ongoing regarding the creation of pest-free (quarantine-free) zones, which would allow potato exports without restrictive barriers.
“If this could be implemented, it would be strong support for the sector in Ukraine. Under our conditions and with our technologies, this segment could develop much more intensively,” the operations director emphasized.
His view was supported by Georg von Nolcken, CEO of the holding, who noted that the absence of quarantine zones and the relatively small scale of professional industrial potato production in Ukraine constrain market volumes and lead to high price volatility from year to year.
As previously reported, in 2025 Ukraine increased potato planting areas by 25% and harvested 50% more potatoes than in the previous year, highlighting the crop’s growing production potential.
