Up to 300,000 hectares of rapeseed may be replanted, total area could fall below 1 mln ha

Ukraine’s rapeseed market is entering the spring period amid heightened uncertainty over winter crop conditions and future production volumes, ProAgro Group reports.

According to the analytical department of the PUSK agricultural cooperative, established within the All-Ukrainian Agrarian Council (VAR), reduced sowing areas, wintering results and possible replanting may significantly affect supply at the beginning of the new marketing year.

“Preliminary estimates suggest that rapeseed acreage for the new season stands at about 1.05–1.1 million hectares. In some regions, sowing areas declined due to changing economic priorities of farms. Winter survival will also have an impact. It cannot be ruled out that 100–300 thousand hectares may need to be replanted. For this crop, this is a significant figure, and the actual area could fall below 1 million hectares. More accurate assessments will be available after crop monitoring in March,” analysts said.

Indicative prices for the new crop (July–August delivery) currently stand at $530–535 per tonne. In western regions, some forward contracts were recorded at $540–543 per tonne for volumes of 2–3 thousand tonnes. For comparison, rapeseed quotations on Euronext remain within €485–495 per tonne without a clear trend.

PUSK analysts advise against aggressive forward sales until the production balance becomes clearer. If the harvest turns out lower than expected, the market may respond with price growth.

Earlier it was reported that up to one third of rapeseed crops are currently considered at risk due to winter weather conditions. In total, around 1.1 million hectares of winter rapeseed were sown for the 2026 harvest in Ukraine.
