Vegetable prices mostly decline in Ukraine while Chinese garlic pushes out local supply

Vegetable prices in Ukraine mostly declined last week, with some products continuing a downward trend that began at the end of winter, ProAgro Group reports.

In particular, prices for white cabbage continued to fall. While at the end of February it was sold for UAH 9–11 per kg, in March the minimum prices dropped to UAH 8 per kg.

Potatoes also became cheaper, with prices declining from UAH 12–15 per kg to UAH 12–14 per kg.

An increase in sales of carrot stocks from storage facilities also led to lower prices. Instead of UAH 12–15 per kg, sellers reduced prices to UAH 10–14 per kg.

Tomatoes have been declining in price for the second week in a row, now selling for UAH 110–125 per kg, compared with UAH 110–135 per kg previously.

Prices for cauliflower and broccoli also moved downward, while Chinese cabbage and garlic became cheaper as well. At the same time, the price range for cucumbers widened from UAH 120–170 per kg to UAH 100–180 per kg.

Among other market trends last week, domestic garlic is rapidly losing positions in the local market to Chinese imports. In the greens segment, lettuce prices continued to fall, while green onions and dill became more expensive.

Earlier it was reported that potato prices in Ukraine rose by 14% at the end of February, reaching UAH 8–15 per kg amid increased demand and limited supply of quality products.
