Wheat and barley areas to expand in 2026, corn acreage to decline slightly – UGA

Ukrainian farmers plan to maintain total grain and oilseed planting areas at 21.2 million hectares in 2026. Wheat and barley are expected to show moderate growth, while corn acreage may decrease slightly, ProAgro Group reports.

According to the Ukrainian Grain Association (UGA), the total area under major grains (wheat, corn and barley) will remain almost unchanged at 11.05 million hectares in 2026, compared to 10.815 million hectares in 2025.

Wheat acreage is projected to increase slightly to 5.25 million hectares versus 5 million hectares last season. Barley plantings are expected to reach 1.4 million hectares, up from 1.315 million hectares in 2025. Meanwhile, corn acreage may decline to 4.4 million hectares compared to 4.5 million hectares this year.

The association notes that export logistics challenges, availability of mineral fertilizers, weather conditions and global supply dynamics may influence planting decisions.

“Loss of territories due to hostilities also affects the total area farmers are able to sow,” the association stated.

Earlier, the Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation reported that sunflower, corn and soybeans will remain the key spring crops next season, while spring barley acreage is expected to decline to around 500 thousand hectares, making it the crop with the sharpest reduction in plantings.
