The average size of an agricultural holding in Ukraine increased to 650 hectares
The average size of a farm in Ukraine increased from 479 ha in 2010 to 649 ha in 2024. This indicator remains significantly higher than the European level.
This is stated in the study “Structure of Agricultural Holdings in Ukraine,” the presentation of which took place during the meeting of the Committee of Agribusiness Entrepreneurs at UCCI.
The study highlights the main theses characterizing the current state of the Ukrainian agricultural sector:
- The role of small Ukrainian rural households (individuals) is decreasing, particularly due to the full-scale Russian invasion.
- Legal entities (enterprises + agricultural holdings) are the basis of agricultural production (71% of total production volume in 2024) and exports.
- Medium enterprises (average size – 1,493 ha per enterprise) play a decisive role.
- Dynamic changes in the segment of medium enterprises: both their number and their share in the total production volume have increased in recent years.
- Concentration is sub-sectoral, not sectoral.
- Farms exceeding 1,000 ha provide nearly 75% of official jobs, while small and medium enterprises are the most socially important.
- The share of agriculture in GDP in 2024 was 13.7% (-0.4 p.p. compared to 2021).
- The agricultural sector creates 2.3-2.5 million jobs (15% of employment).
- Exports of agricultural products amounted to $24.5 billion (59% of the total volume, compared to 40% in 2021).
- Total losses of the Ukrainian agro-industrial complex due to Russian aggression exceeded $80 billion USD.
- 5 million hectares (up to 20% of agricultural land) are inaccessible due to mineral extraction and occupation.
