The Chornotysiv Terminal in Zakarpattia region has expanded its services and begun accepting and handling containers with grain transported within Ukraine. Usually, grain in containers is sent for export. However, due to a shortage of grain wagons and their high cost during peak periods, the company decided to introduce a new logistics option, reports ProAgro Group.
According to terminal manager Hordiy Mishchenko, the terminal’s infrastructure allows for working with an unlimited number of containers on both broad and narrow gauge tracks. The new system is particularly relevant for farms that cannot load 3,600–3,800 tons with hoppers at once. Containers allow targeted shipments of 500 to 1,200 tons, which can then be transferred to railcars or accumulated for further logistics.
“For example, Ukrzaliznytsia and the owners of wagons and grain cars want to send full trains for loading. But with this platform-container technology, we can split them and send 17 platforms, i.e., 34 containers, to one location, and 8 platforms, i.e., 16 containers, to another, depending on the farm’s loading capacity,” explains Mishchenko.
The terminal cooperates with Porto Cargo, which supplied Chornotysiv with 54 containers and 27 platforms for grain transport. The number can be increased according to market demand.
