Ukraine’s Grain Elevators Suffer $1.1 Billion in Losses Due to War

Ukraine’s grain elevator sector has suffered losses estimated at approximately $1.1 billion during the full-scale war and has lost up to 13 million tonnes of grain storage capacity. This was reported by Pavlo Martyshev, analyst at the Center for Food and Land Use Research (KSE Agrocenter) of the Kyiv School of Economics, ProAgro Group reports.

Currently, Ukraine’s elevator storage capacity stands at about 53 million tonnes, which is roughly 4 million tonnes less than in 2021, the analyst said.

Over four years of full-scale war, Ukraine has lost an estimated 9 to 13 million tonnes of grain storage capacity, although part of these facilities has since been restored, Martyshev noted.

Despite the reduction in storage capacity, there is no significant shortage of grain storage, as grain and oilseed production declined from 106 million tonnes in 2021 to around 76 million tonnes in 2025, he explained.

As reported earlier, according to estimates by the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE), indirect financial losses of Ukraine’s agricultural sector caused by Russia’s military aggression amount to $81.9 billion in lost revenue and $33.5 billion in lost value added. The largest share of indirect losses falls on crop production.
