US winter wheat area to hit lowest level since 1919 – USDA forecast

The USDA has released its first outlook for U.S. planting areas for the 2026/27 marketing year in the Prospective Plantings NASS report, indicating a decline in acreage for both wheat and corn, ProAgro Group reports.

Compared to the previous year, the total area planted with all types of wheat is expected to decrease by 3% — from 45.3 to 43.775 million acres. In particular, winter wheat area is projected at 32.41 million acres (the lowest level since 1919), spring wheat at 9.42 million acres, and durum wheat at 1.95 million acres.

Analysts note that the war in Iran and rising prices for nitrogen fertilizers may prompt farmers to reconsider their crop structure.

As previously reported, according to preliminary forecasts by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), global wheat production in 2026 could reach around 810 million tonnes, which is approximately 3% lower than expected in the current season.
