Agrometeorological conditions for the successful overwintering of winter crops are currently generally satisfactory, ProAgro Group reports.
This is largely due to the good condition of crops before entering winter and the formation of sufficient frost resistance in plants. In most areas, fields are covered with snow 5–15 cm deep, while in western and northern regions snow depth reaches 16–38 cm. Such snow cover provides reliable protection for the root systems of winter crops.
According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, no threats have been identified so far for winter wheat and rye. However, for winter rapeseed and barley, which are less frost-resistant, risks are emerging in southern regions and across many areas of Poltava, Kirovohrad, and Sumy regions, where snow cover is absent or less than 5 cm, and air temperatures dropped to −12 to −17°C for several consecutive days.
The risk is particularly high for crops that were overdeveloped in autumn. The situation may worsen as forecasts indicate no significant snowfall and a possible intensification of frost in the coming days.
As reported earlier in early January, existing snow cover across most regions had provided reliable protection for winter crops ahead of the onset of abnormally low temperatures.
