Winter crops in Ukraine exit winter with losses, partial reseeding expected

Ukrainian farmers are reporting losses of winter crops after the winter season and are preparing for partial reseeding, ProAgro Group reports.

In Mykolaiv region, winter crop losses may reach about 10% due to cold weather and field flooding. This was stated by Volodymyr Afanasiev, a representative of the regional agricultural department.

“During the cold winter, crops suffered some damage, but it is not critical. However, flooding in certain areas will lead to additional losses,” he said.

According to Afanasiev, around 10% of winter crops typically require reseeding each year, while final estimates for the 2026 season will become clear after vegetation resumes. He also noted that soil moisture reserves are currently higher than in previous years, supporting crop recovery.

A similar situation is observed in Kharkiv region. According to Andrii Voronkin, director of Kolos LLC, severe frost and ice crust damaged crops, but most winter crops have survived.

“The ice crust and strong frosts destroyed the vegetative mass of winter wheat, but now it is recovering, and fields are gradually turning green,” he said.

Favorable moisture levels and rising temperatures are helping crops recover, while farmers have already started spring sowing. Part of the affected areas is being reseeded with spring crops.

“We have already sown spring peas and continue planting spring wheat. Where moisture allows, machinery is already working in the fields,” Voronkin added.

Earlier, Deputy Minister Taras Vysotskyi stated that in most regions of Ukraine the condition of winter crops is assessed as satisfactory, with potential losses or reseeding needs below 10%.
